MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT EXAM: Preparing for the Exam


In preparation for the Mathematics Placement Exam, students are encouraged to review the topics covered and take one or more of the practice exams.
Exam Content
Topics covered in the exam:
• Linear relationships and equations, inequalities, and their graphs
• Solving quadratic equations by factoring and the quadratic formula; graphs of parabolas
• Logarithms and exponents: computing, approximating, and graphing related functions
• Solving more complicated equations, synthesizing algebraic techniques
• Simplifying algebraic expressions with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, and roots
• Geometry, including similar and congruent triangles, circles, Pythagorean theorem, areas and volumes
• Trigonometry, including sine, cosine, and tangent functions, applied to right triangles and circles
The Science and Engineering Library has the following:
Review the topics above in "Precalculus" a textbook by Cohen, Cruzcat link
Schaum's "Outline for Elementary Algebra" is an excellent resource for more practice problems, Cruzcat link
The McHenry Media Library has the following:
Review a set of videos, developed by Professor Ed Landesman, which provide a review of Precalculus, Cruzcat link
Practice Exam
The Math Diagnostic Testing Program offers two 'readiness' tests including the "Online Calculus Readiness Test (CR)" that can help students identify which topics they need to review prior to taking the placement exam.
