Qualifying for the Major

Students who began their studies at UCSC in Fall 2012 or later must qualify to declare an astrophysics major.

To qualify for an Astrophysics BS major, PHYS 5ABC must be completed with a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Students may petition to declare once they have successfully completed, or currently have in progress, the courses required by the qualification policy.

Students who do not meet the qualification policy criteria may appeal by writing a letter to the Astronomy and Astrophysics Curriculum Chair. For more information about the appeal process, see our Appeal Process page.
